History of Mega Millions
It was in August 31, 1996 when tickets were first sold in the states of Georgia, Michigan, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Maryland. Mega Million was created by lottery directors Rebecca Paul of Georgia Lottery and Penelope Kyle of Virginia Lottery. Since 1999, winners were already given the choice to receive their prize in cash. It was in 2002 when the name “Mega Millions” was used as replacement for “The Big Game.”
Jackpot Prizes History
On March 30, 2012 drawing, the largest jackpot in American lottery history happened with the Mega Millions largest jackpot winning of USD 656 million annuitized (with a cash option of USD 474 million) was awarded. There were three jackpot-winning tickets. All three tickets had been claimed as of April 18, with each set of winners choosing the cash option. Mega Millions second-largest jackpot winning was USD 390 million, occurred on March 6, 2007 drawing. Two tickets, one each from Georgia and New Jersey, split the then-record prize; both sets of winners chose the cash option, splitting USD 233 million. Due to interest rates change, it resulted in different ratios between the cash values and annuity values of jackpots. 
Mega Millions’ third largest jackpot winning was USD 380 million, and second largest cash jackpot which amounted to USD 240 million, occurred on January 4, 2011 drawing; two tickets, one each from Post Falls, Idaho, and Ephrata, Washington, matched all six winning numbers. The holders of each ticket also chose the cash option splitting USD 240 million. For the jackpot type, the Jackpot was paid in 26 annual installments (tax rate of 34.00%) or in lump sum with a tax rate of approximately 50%.
The final 5/56 + 1/46 Mega Millions drawing was held on October 18, 2013 but its jackpot of $37 Million was not won. On October 22, 2013, the drawing had a different format wherein there has been a change in the annuity structure. The minimum jackpot is now $15 Million with rollovers of at least $5 Million. Second prize (5+0) is now $1 Million cash. Players now choose 5 of 75 white ball numbers, and 1 "Gold Ball" number out of 15.
Schedule of Draws
On the night of each drawing, there are six prerecorded draws: four "test" drawings, then the actual drawing, followed by a "post test" draw. The draws are scheduled twice a week, on Wednesdays at 23:00, and on Saturdays at 23:00.The results of drawings are not official until they are audited by the accounting firm Harvey, Covington & Thomas, LLC.
